Vanguard Path of Conquest: Spires
2020 has been an interesting year and with the end of it also comes the end of Milestone 3 for our Tale of Four Gamers. I hope a slightly smaller Milestone helped everyone get caught up, I know it let me spend a bit more time on my miniature then I normally would which was a lot of fun. We got our Avatara in the last Milestone and I had an absolute blast painting those guys. Looking forward, in Milestone 4 we get another amazing regiment to add to our army in the Marksmen Clones and we help shore up our numbers with even more Force Grown Drones. I’m incredibly excited for the additions from this milestone and I’m even more excited to talk about the strategy for this list.
Milestone 3 brought an amazing unit in the Avatara along with the Lineage Highborne. I cannot stress how important these units are to our overall game plan. The Avatara are our toolbox unit, able to hold objectives with their impressive defensive stats, while still being able to cause some damage because of cleave. With our Pheromancer supporting them with healing they will be an incredibly difficult unit to get rid of. With the Highborne in their ranks they are boosted to the impressive resolve of 5 meaning resolve checks should not be an issue for this unit. Overall the Avatara are the platform we need to make our other regiments function, they hold territory, win fights, and stick around to do it all over again.
Milestone 4 brings to our list one of the most impressive units within the Spire faction, The Marksmen Clones. These Clones boast an impressive array of abilities that make them deadly at range. Having a maximum range of 28 inches makes these guys one of the longest ranged unit in the game, and getting 2 shots a piece per volley is just a cherry on top. Their special ability “Arcing Fire” allows them to forgo the benefits from aiming to instead ignore line of sight when shooting. I don’t think I need to explain why this is a great ability, it lets the Marksmen sit pretty much anywhere on the field and shoot without worrying about positioning. Marksmen Clones are perfectly tailored to sit back and fire volley after volley while safely hiding behind your more pressing threats. Played correctly these Clones will put in work in any Spire list and can be absolutely brutal against lightly armored targets. However, you will need to be careful when playing them, a light breeze will blow these guys over so keep them out of combat and away from harm. This Milestone also brings us another three stands of Force Grown Drones because we can never have enough Drones in our list. These extra drones are to fill up some mainstay slots in our list to get us to more restricted choices. While not being terribly effective on the battlefield Force Grown Drones are dirt cheap and can screen for your other units fairly effectively when they are not running around with one of your characters.
Milestone 4 brings us some crucial regiments to help round out our list and give us some ranged punch. The Marksmen Clones added in the Milestone help us achieve our game plan by softening up targets at extreme range, allowing our offensive melee regiments to move in and finish the job. We have some fun synergy with the Avatara and the Marksmen clones as well, using arcing fire the Marksmen Clones can shoot over the Avatara while remaining relatively safe from return fire while hiding behind them. Having some range in our list opens up a lot of new lines of play for us and should help our original game plan tremendously. Pressure the field fast and early, have the Avatara hammer a key enemy regiment or objective, and have the Abomination enter late game to clean up any fight not going your way. When playing, always remember that Spire do not like prolonged engagements, try to finish your combats fast and more to the next, let the game go too long and Spire will start to struggle.
Milestone 3 has been an incredibly enjoyable Milestone, I loved every second of painting these Avatara and am really happy with how they turned out. Milestone 5 will be the last month of adding miniatures to this army, at this point, with no upgrades we are sitting at about 1800 points in total worth of models. In milestone 6 I plan on going over the characters we use and how to spend those final remaining 200 points. Also, I have been participating in the Tabletop Simulator Championship over the past month which has been a blast and I highly recommend looking for any content on that in the future. I wish everyone following along the best of luck in this milestone and I cannot wait to see more progress from everyone going forward. As always I am always open for questions on the official discord so feel free to send a message to Vanguard Judgewyrm at any time. Good luck and have a great month everyone.
