Vanguard Path of Conquest: Dave’s Hundred Kingdoms

Vanguard Path of Conquest: Dave’s Hundred Kingdoms

“We’re looking for players to write articles in a ‘Tale of Four Gamers’ format”…….

I saw the post and immediately responded saying “ooooh pickmepickmepickme”. It was only afterwards that I realised that I’d said yes without any kind of plan, and without considering that my style of painting is haphazard and random to say the least. Normally I have about half a dozen projects on the go and I just fling paint at whatever takes my fancy at that moment. Recognising that I need to be a little bit more regimented (pun intended?) in how I paint I thought I’d use this first article for the series to set out my plans and hopefully keep me on track.

I picked the Hundred Kingdoms faction for this project as I’ve already got a few of their characters painted up, and I have a pile of half done plastic from the starter set that I really need to work on.

For Milestone 1 (September), I am getting the 100 kingdoms single player starter set. This is a wonderful way to kick of a force as it contains a pair of militia boxes and the rather lovely Household Knights. The character in the box is the epic Foot Noble Lord.  I will be assembling both of my militia as Spearmen. Individually they are quite weak, but at 30 points a stand they are really good value. The lord will accompany them to provide additional punch (especially when buffed with skills and a retinue). Points wise the 100 Kingdoms starter set is low at just over 400 before upgrades, but it is a really decent start especially when we see what happens in month 2.

With this first batch done, for Milestone 2 (October) I aim to get the 100 Kingdoms part of my 2 player starter set completed. The models in the starter are incredibly good value, and in my opinion are all really solid choices. I’ll have the mounted Noble lord with his regiment of 3 household knights, backed up by 3 stands of crossbowmen and 6 stands of Men at Arms. When combined with the 1 player starter from month 1 it also comes in at around 1000 points which is a really nice level to aim for with a new force.

Noble Lord with Arms Master – 80 pts

5 stands Militia Spearmen with Banner – 165 pts

6 stands Men At Arms with Seasoned Veteran – 240 pts

Mounted Noble Lord with Arms Master – 115 pts

3 stands Crossbow – 105 ts

5 stands Household Knights with Standard – 290 pts

To further expand the selection in Milestone 3 (November), I will get some household Guard add a Theist Priest and Chapter Mage. I will move the foot noble lord from the Militia to the Household Guard and will have the two spellcasters running around with the militia spearmen & men at arms spitting out holy fire and fire darts everywhere. That will add some serious ranged power and anti magic ability to the force.

Having messed around with quite a few games of 100 kingdoms, I know that stat wise they are not individually a match for the other factions, so I will aim to build up combinations of units to gang up on the enemy regiments. Having lots of activations can really help me to dictate the flow of the early game turns, and force the opposing player to activate the bulk of their units before I strike with my heavy hitters

the 1500 point force will probably look a little like this:

Noble Lord with Arms Master and now with Combat Retinue 3 and Caledburn – 135 pts

5 stands Household Guard with standard – 275 pts

The Mounted Noble Lord and his crossbows and knights remain the same

Chapter Mage with Fire Dart, Magic Retinue 1, and the chapter scroll (Tears) – 105 pts

The men-at-arms sit under her now

Theist Priest with Holy Fire and Magic Retinue 1 – 75 pts

The 5 stands of militia spearmen now go under him

Finally, I aim to take this force to 2000 points in Milestone 4 (December) with the final addition of the Imperial Officer, more crossbowmen and the fearsome Steel Legion. Adding in a full tactical retinue is rather expensive, but it guarantees that you will get the heavy Legion in turn 3 to maximise the impact these elite troops have on the game. This combined with the “Double Time” battlefield Drill means that this regiment will be right in the thick of it nice and early.

Noble Lord with Arms Master and now with Combat Retinue 3 and Caledburn – 135 pts

5 stands Household Guard with standard – 275 pts

Mounted Noble Lord with Arms Master – 115 pts

3 stands Crossbow – 105 ts

5 stands Household Knights with Standard – 290 pts

Chapter Mage with Fire Dart, Magic Retinue 1, and the chapter scroll (Tears) – 105 pts

The men-at-arms sit under her now

Theist Priest with Holy Fire and Magic Retinue 1 – 75 pts

The 5 stands of militia spearmen now go under him

Adding in an Imperial Officer with Double Time and Tactical Retinue 3 – 125 pts

5 stands Steel Legion with standard – 270 pts

3 more stands of Crossbow – 105 pts

Grand Total 1,995 pts

By the end of this project I will end up with a numerous and flexible force that will have plenty of options on the battlefield and will give me a nice bit of variety when painting.

Now I simply need to stay on track, not get distracted and grind through 120+ models before the end of the year! Will it happen? Place your bets now!
