A Tale of Four Gamers: Spires Milestone 5

A Tale of Four Gamers: Spires Milestone 5

Another month down and it looks like we are closing in on the end of this Tale of Four Gamers. The holidays have finally come to an end and things are returning to normal, which sadly means we no longer have an excuse for not getting our painting done. I, for one, have had an eventful holiday season but the Milestones keep coming and I am happy to say that as of this month the Spire army is at its 2000 point goal. With the army painted and the general strategy for the list discussed in my earlier articles I wanted to spend this month going over some of the ways we can fill out the list by looking a little more closely at our characters and what they can bring.

Starting with the backbone of the list we have the Pheromancer and there are a lot of fun and interesting ways to run this guy. Mastery of flesh tier 3 allows him to process 2 draw events a turn and can be a major game changer. When it comes to Mutations for the Pheromancer I tend to look at two specifically. Degeneration Aura is a very powerful mutation that will make your opponent think twice about trying to take on your pheromancer in close combat. Sensory Augmentation also allows you to fix a broken command stack due to losing a regiment or anything else that may mess with the order of your turn. A third and equally interesting option is the Avatara Projection that makes the Pheromancer a Brute, this one can be really fun and watching the Pheromancer run through your opponent’s lines in a group of Brute Drones is priceless. As for Pheromancies a few can help our game plan. Accelerated Hibernation is a go-to Pheromancy and will be seen a lot, putting a regiment at the bottom of the command stack is a small price to pay for healing anything on the board for a nice chunk. Induced Vigor can also be a lot of fun in conjunction with the Avatara projection, giving Brute Drones plus two march or fluid formation can really help them maneuver around the board. All in all the Pheromancer is a toolbox of useful tricks that can help you get out of just about any sticky situation.

Our second Character is the High Clone Executor and this guy has the options to fit just about any role you may need on the battlefield. Retinue options can allow him to either Flank in with his unit of choice. Combat, while being restricted, can still have him hit just that much harder in the thick of things. We have several draw events that the High Clone Executor has access to and a few of them are really great. Fire and Advance with some Marksmen Clones helps to make sure they are never short of targets to hit and Double Time will allow any unit of Vanguard Clones he has joined to get where they need to as fast as possible. Mutations are where we get a huge amount of customization for the High Clone Executor and there are so many interesting ones to look at. Adaptive Evolution is a very powerful ability that allows the Executor to increase his stats as the game progresses. Biotic Hive will allow the Executor to sit in one of his powerful ranged units and not lose much of his effectiveness, allowing him to hit hard in both ranged and melee combat. Overall the High Clone Executor can be built to fit just about any role you would need him to on the battlefield.

Finally we get to our Lineage Highborn, a monster of a character and a major player in the list. While the Highborn is unable to take retinues she still has the option to be a formidable force on the tabletop. Cascading degeneration works very well with the resist decay Avatara. The defensive Mutations also fit nicely with the Highborne as they can keep her alive a little longer when fighting duels, take your pick of whichever one fits your tastes best. While there are several great upgrades the Highborn can take she is already built for success with base resolve 5 and decent offensive stats, she will keep her regiment of Avatara around for quite some time.

So with that we are officially in the final stretch of this Tale of Four Gamers. The list is at 2000 points, the Characters are set with plenty of options and all that is left is to get out there and play some games. Next month we will put it all together with some tips and tricks on the faction and some final thoughts to go along with it. I hope everyone has as much success as I have following these milestones and I will talk to you all next month.
